PICTURE:EDO STATE GOVERNOR EMPLOYS FEMALES AS BUS DRIVERS
The state governor surprised not a few persons, having mandated that ladies should be engaged as drivers for the state's public transport system, known as Edo City Transport Services (ECTS). When Governor Oshiomhole informed the ECTS boss, Mrs Edugie Agbonlahor, early last year that he wanted a crop of girls to drive the Daewoo Luxury Buses plying the city, she was surprised, although pleased. Without hesitation, she set to work instantly, advertising for applications. But since such a development has never been seen anywhere in Nigeria, people did not take them seriously, and this resulted in the low turnout of girls.
One other factor that brought doubts into the minds of Edolites, as Edo people are fondly called, was the fact that the advert said that they wanted girls without experience. I laughed when I heard it, and that was why I never bothered to apply. I may have got the job too, since I was qualified too , says Efemena Agbodo, a passenger at Ring Road in a voice laden with envy at the lucky ladies driving the buses.
It was fascinating to see these young women, most of them between 22 and 25 years of age, driving the long, heavy, air conditioned buses as if they were driving small cars. One of the drivers who simply identified herself as Blessing, told Sunday Mirror that though the job is stressful, she was never scared of driving on the highway. She explained that the type of training she received has given her all the confidence she needs: Initially, I would be wondering what if something goes wrong, but as time went on, my confidence increased. I can now drive without fear.

There were also other amazing new details about the attempt to save British construction engineer, Chris McManus, 28, and Italian Franco Lamolinara, 47, who were executed by kidnappers within seconds of the first shots being fired. Crack troops from the Special British Service were said to have put their faith in the Nigerian top brass because many of them had claimed to have been trained at Sandhurst, the internationally renowned military academy in Surrey.
A security source revealed that the Nigerian soldiers were allowed to lead the rescue because of the fears that the black faces of British soldiers on the streets near the captors hide-out would alert them and residents to impending raid. The Nigerian troops are also being criticised for going in too strong.
The ensuing fire fight lasted nearly ten hours until the gang ran out of ammunition. This is in sharp contrast to the British and American rescue operations, which employs surprise element , superior fire power and few minutes of insert, rescue and evacuate mode of operation( usually between two to ten minutes).
In Sokoto the Nigerian troops had to smash their way into the compound with an armoured vehicle. It was a bit out of control. Some of the Nigerians had a rush of blood to the head and went charging in, said a well-placed source within the forces that were in the country for some time before the ill fated rescue attempt. This type of hostage rescue really requires a far more subtle assault.
It is just not possible for a group of white men to go roaming round without raising suspicions. This happened in their country and we had to accept their rules of action. Events overtook us; this was not our original plan.
The Nigerians went in too strong and heavy-handed. Had it been left to the SBS it would have been different, the source complained. The mission against the Boko Haram sect was allegedly authorised by Prime Minister David Cameron who was said to have feared that the chances of saving the pair were rapidly dwindling.
Boko Haram member, Abu Muhammed, who was arrested last Tuesday was said to have broken under interrogation and warned the two hostages were in imminent danger. Another source has revealed that there was a 72-hour window of opportunity for a rescue on the hide-out in Sokoto.
Last weekend, State Security Service, SSS officers were said to have been vigorously interrogating the three Boko Haram followers captured in the failed mission last Thursday especially on whether there had been a leak about the rescue bid.
Meanwhile the suspected kidnappers of the two Europeans were said to have opened up on Saturday on why they killed the duo explaining that they decided to perpetuate the act following their belief that they would be killed by security agents who invaded their hideout.
The suspects, who were moved to Abuja on Friday by security agents for interrogation by skilled security personnel told their interrogators that they were under instruction of their leaders to shoot the hostages whenever they came under any threat from security agents.
We had a standing instruction to kill the hostages immediately we sight security agents around the building. We were to kill the hostages since we were not sure of being alive after an encounter with security men, one of the suspects lamented.

Edo MDGs Holds Stakeholders’ Workshop
BENIN CITY - Edo State MDGs has held a five-day training workshop for secondary stakeholders who are involved in the implementation of MDGs in the State.
This became necessary in view of the fact that government functionaries who are involved in the daily delivery of the programmes and activities geared towards the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals must be repositioned through training and retraining in order to ensure prompt and effective service delivery.
The Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHSCF) and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs conceptualized the capacity building workshop and mandated the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan, to conduct the training for secondary stakeholders on MDGs across the country. Edo State has now taken its turn in the training of its staff in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) who are involved in the implementation of MDGs in the State, and about 25 members of staff have been trained.
It is instructive to note that the capacity building programme arose from the observed lapses in the implementation of the development strategies of the Federal and State Governments in Nigeria during 2004 - 2008.
To address the observed challenges, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs embarked on this laudable programme to build and strengthen the capacities of civil servants with a view to improving the implementation of MDGs across the country.

Loyola Jesuit varsity gets C of O
BENIN CITY – Edo State Government has issued a Certificate of Occupancy for the land to build a university by Loyola Jesuit Order at Ewatto Community in Esan South East Local Government Area.
Making the presentation at the Government House in Benin City, Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole said the Certificate of Occupancy for the land is part of the state development agenda to encourage even development in all parts of the state.
“We have waived all fees to enable the Jesuit Order start the project and the money that would have been spent on the C of O should be diverted to other projects. This will no doubt increase the economic activity in the rural communities”, he noted.
According to the governor who advised that work should commence immediately, the establishment of a University at Ewatto Community is an incentive for other investors to focus on the rural areas.
The leader of the delegation, His Royal Highness, M.S.O. Ikhumhen JP who commended the state Governor for the success recorded so far on infrastructural development, said they have come to thank him, in appreciation of the development going on across the state.
The traditional ruler described the Governor as a great patriot who has committed his life to the all round development of Edo State.
“You have demonstrated your love for education with the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy to Loyola Jesuit for a parcel of land measuring two hundred hectares for the establishment of a university”, he added.
While pledging the unflinching support of Ewatto people to Comrade Oshiomhole’s administration, the royal father noted that Ewatto people are totally behind the Governor.

Peace keeping: Oshiomhole lauds role of royal fathers
OKPEKPE - Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has lauded the contributions of traditional rulers to the peace and stability of the state, pledging his continued commitment to working with them in the interest of the people. Comrade Oshiomhole stated this at the weekend at the 10th installation anniversary of His Royal Highness, Peter Abalume Osigbemeh, the Onwueweko of Okpekpe Kingdom in Etsako East Local Government Area. According to him, ‘’let me assure your royal highnesses here present that we remain committed to working with traditional rulers and consulting them and carrying along. As we have seen in the first three years, when you listen to elders and you work with elders you will be better off. My relationship with the traditional institutions has translated to benefits for the good of the people.” The governor explained that his desire to construct the Okpekpe road was borne out of the need to give the people a sense of belonging. ‘’I appreciate communities and villages which are located in terrains such as yours and who have give up. I believe that the purpose of governance is make things happen”, adding that no human being created by God is condemned to positions in which progress is impossible. “If Nigerians are still wallowing in pain, poverty and hopelessness, it is because of crisis of governance and the failure of political leadership over the years” he noted. “As I drove through this terrain and I saw the road, I felt good that we been able to show that if you can think through it, you can achieve it and this is the evidence.” Governor Oshiomhole however, gave the credit of his achievements to the Oba of Benin, saying, “your royal highness, the person you should appreciate for this road is His Royal Majesty the Oba of Benin and the good people of Benin Kingdom, because the votes that brought me to office was the result of the massive support I enjoyed from Benin people and his Royal Majesty. If you look at the number of votes, the story is clear. Even with their rigging machine, they could not defeat us in Oredo, Ikpoba Okha and Egor all in the heart of Benin City and it is their support that has made me to deliver.” Earlier, the Clan Head of Okpekpe, HRH. Peter Osigbemeh said one of the major achievements of his reign was the attainment of peace in the community. “I want to use this opportunity to thank the governor for the construction of our road and I urge all my subjects at home and in Diaspora to mobilize and come July 14th 2012 to vote en-masse for the comrade governor. This is the only way we can thank him”, he said. |

New song for Edo ACN
What appeared to be an imminent cloud threatening the cohesion of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Edo ahead of the July 14 governorship election in the state may, after all, not be devastating, writes JAMES AZANIA
When a local columnist in Edo State wrote that the Action Congress of Nigeria’s slogan, ‘Democracy for Justice,’ was in danger of going into extinction, and about to be supplanted with the chants, ‘Odubu must go’ and ‘No Odubu no election,’ at official party functions, many observers of recent political events in the state would have agreed. This was because the surreptitious rejection of Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s deputy as the former’s second term running mate in the forthcoming governorship election was nearing a boiling point.
The issue had been that the ACN Vice-Chairman, South-South, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu’s foot soldiers and supporters were behind the calls. Both Pius Odubu and Ize-Iyamu, ironically, are from Edo South, nay same Orhiomwon Local Government Area of the state.
The argument, according to some of the unofficial spokespersons of Ize-Iyamu, is that it was he (Ize-Iyamu) that invited and nominated Odubu, a two-time House of Representatives member (1999 to 2007), to be Oshiomhole’s running mate and hence, it remains his discretion to say when Odubu steps down.
Ize-Iyamu, a former Secretary to the Edo State Government under the PDP administration of former Governor Lucky Igbinedion, no doubt, is a founding member of Edo ACN, having featured prominently in the ‘Grace Group’ alliance that pitted itself against the Tony Anenih-led faction of the party then. It was a divide that ultimately rendered the PDP near comatose and consigned it to being the opposition party in a state it ruled for over 10 years. The tenure had started at the advent of the new political dispensation in 1999.
So bad was the situation that some political analysts predicted that the ACN may suffer a loss in Edo State.
Events came to a head during an end-of-the-year party organised by Oshiomhole. What played out at the event, which held at the Best Western Hotel in Benin on Jan 30, 2012, was to shock some of those in attendance when supporters of both leaders (Odubu and Ize-Iyamu) clashed openly, hurling insults at one another in the presence of Oshiomhole and other ACN bigwigs. It took the sagacity of Oshiomhole to calm the feuding party members and save the situation from degenerating into a free-for-all. While a faction of the party loyal to Ize-Iyamu chanted ‘Odubu must go,’ those for Odubu cried, ‘No Odubu as second term running mate, no election.’
As supporters of both leaders continued to slug it out at subsequent party gatherings, observers of political events began to wonder how long the centre would hold in Edo ACN, with rumours of Ize-Iyamu’s dumping of the party for the PDP renting the air.
Events of the last week, however, appear to prove right what other observers have described as the resilience of Edo ACN under Oshiomhole with the feuding factions singing ‘a new song.’
What unfolded at an enlarged state executive committee meeting on Monday, ironically at the same venue, where the earlier event almost turned into war, became out as what a party supporter dubbed a pleasant surprise.
Whether he was whipped into line, cajoled or pleaded with, Ize-Iyamu made a moving speech that in effect collapsed all factions into what he described as a strong and united ACN in Edo State.
So moved was Oshiomhole that he described the moment as one of his happiest. Before Oshiomhole, former Foreign Affairs Minister and ACN National Leader, Chief Tom Ikimi, in his oratorical best, applauded what unfolded, giving more applause to Oshiomhole for his “role in making Edo ACN the pride of all Edo people.”
Before the public declaration of a truce, Ize-Iyamu had during a smaller gathering a week earlier, stated his own position. Odubu, on the other hand, and true to type, did not comment on the issue.
The ACN national vice-chairman had told a group of journalists that rumours of his involvement in the agitation for the rejection of Odubu’s candidacy were purely in the realm of speculation.
Ize-Iyamu had said, “I’m sure many of you know that am not interested in the Edo deputy governorship position. Even if the governor is to call me to say, ‘please be my deputy governor,’ I will decline politely; not because I despise that office, but simply because I believe square pegs should be put in square holes. The position of deputy governor should be given to those who can adequately play that role. I’m contented as the national vice-chairman of our party and the party is growing. To the glory of God, from one, we have won six states. It means that the party has a lot of potentials. So, for people to believe that somebody holding such an office (vice-chairman) would now be thinking of becoming a deputy governor is surprising to me.
“In politics, disagreements are allowed and that is one of the beauties of the ACN, but what is important is that we do not allow our disagreement to lead to the disintegration of the party we have built. I’m an experienced party man and I know that by the time we vote in our primaries, we don’t vote for deputy governorship candidate, we vote for who will be the governorship candidate. The process of the choice of a deputy governor does not allow lobbying. There is no doubt that the issue has brought a lot of controversies, but not from me. Nobody can really quote me on the issue of who will want to be the deputy governor, but we monitor the opinions of our members; after all, the deputy governor is not even the issue, it is the governor. We have agreed that Governor Oshiomhole will run a second term and by the time he emerges from our primaries, which will of course be democratically conducted, it is he, in consultation with the party leadership, that will decide who his deputy will be.”
At the open event, Ize-Iyamu went further, “I can never be one to work against the interest of our great party. Edo ACN remains as united as ever and the impeccable performance of the comrade governor is added impetus for us to even do better as party members.”
While Oshiomhole said unfolding events would be bad news for those he described as the detractors of Edo ACN, Ikimi said it would sadden the same set of people referred to by the governor.
Oshiomhole described the unfolding events as unprecedented, saying it would be a source “of sadness for those outside.”
He said, “What we’re witnessing today gladdens my mind to no end, showing that our party has continued to grow in unity, and with a resolve to continue in the service of our great state. We will not rest on our oars in our determination to make life better for the people of Edo State and to project further that things can work and indeed are working in Edo.”
Soliciting support for Oshiomhole, Ikimi said, “Of course, before Edo State was won, our critics would say ACN was a Yoruba party, but since then they have ceased to say so. Very soon, we will be doing our governorship election, and we will come out in our numbers, together with the good people of the state, to reward the governor for his good work and his unsurpassed dedication to the lifting of Edo State. People from other political divides and from even outside of the state have come to acknowledge the monumental changes that have been taking place in the state, for which the ACN and we as indigenes of the state are very proud of.”
Chief Francis Inegbeniki, an ACN leader in the state, added his voice, accusing people he described as party detractors as being responsible for falsehood about the ACN.
He said, “As at today, we have only one aspirant running for the position of governorship in Edo State. This alone is a source of headache for detractors of our great party. There is no crisis in Edo State ACN; the party is a united family. What you are hearing that some people are saying they don’t want Odubu as deputy governor or they don’t want this or that as governor, I must tell you this is as a result of the influx of people from the PDP to the ACN every day. The party is now a very big party, therefore, there are bound to be some challenges. Also, what we are having in Edo ACN is not a crisis but a family quarrel. It is like the teeth and the tongue: they live together inside the mouth and they still quarrel; that is why sometimes you see blood coming out from the tongue but they still live together.”
However, it is left to be seen if the new-found love and unity in the party will be sustained. Some observers believe that the true position of things will come to the fore when it is time to share political offices if and when Oshiomhole wins a second term.
ACN has become nightmare for incumbents — Ize-Iyamu
The Vice Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, South-South and former Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, in this interview with JAMES AZANIA explains his role in the recent political upheavals in Edo State
There are rumours that you are behind agitations for the rejection of the state deputy governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, as running mate to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, in his second term bid. How true is this?
Look around in all the South-South states and what you see is that the ACN remains a dominant force. The fear of the ACN has become nightmare for incumbents, and they use their power of incumbency to thwart the peoples will. But for how long can they do this? Nigerians have come to recognise which party is working and ready to continue working. The cornerstone of the ACN, which is bringing the dividends of democracy to bear on the lives of the ordinary Nigerian, is the source of its strength. As a more transparent system becomes better institutionalised and the will of the people is no longer trampled on, so will more ACN-administration come into power in the South-South geo-political zone.
There are rumours that you are behind agitations for the rejection of the state deputy governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, as running mate to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, in his second term bid. How true is this?
I am sure that many people know that I am not interested in Edo deputy governor position. Even if the governor should call me today to say ‘please be my deputy governorship,’ I will decline politely; not because I despise that office but simply because I believe square pegs should be put in square holes. The position of deputy governor should be given to those who can adequately play that role. I don’t pick an office simply because it is offered. I try to look at what I can achieve and do with the office. I am contented as the national vice chairman of our party and the party is growing. To the glory of God, from one, we have won six states. It means that the party has a lot of potential, so for people to believe that somebody holding such an office (vice chairman) would now be thinking of becoming a deputy governor is surprising to me.
In politics, disagreements are allowed and that is one of the beauties of the ACN, but what is important is that we do not allow our disagreement to lead to the disintegration of the party we have built. This is a party where we call a spade a spade and we disagree in order to agree.
I am an experienced party man and I know that by the time we vote in our primaries, we don’t vote for the deputy governorship candidate, we vote for who will be the governorship candidate. The process of the choice of a deputy governor does not allow lobbying. There is no doubt that the issue has brought about a lot of controversies, but not from me.
It was also said that you planned to dump the ACN…
It was speculated that my supporters were planning to join the Peoples Democratic Party but these are simply speculations. I am one of those who built the ACN in Edo State and it would be ridiculous of me to leave the ACN. For those of us who know how we left the PDP, it would be ridiculous that I return to the PDP. Whatever the disagreement we have, it can never lead to leaving the party. We left the PDP because we wanted an alternative platform to checkmate the arrogance of the PDP, and to go back to the monster that we left is not the question here. Secondly, we wanted a platform that will spur development in Edo State.
There was a time people considered the ACN as a party that is localised to the South West, but the victory in Edo has shown that the ACN has huge potential. We also have strong showings in other places, including Adamawa and Kogi states.
What is your take on the impact of your party in other South-South states?
Edo 2012: Oshiomhole will win resoundingly at first ballot -Tom Ikimi
With the emergence of General Charles Archiabvare as the gubernatorial aspirant of the PDP in July’s governorship election in Edo state, the stage appear set for the political brinkmanship and battle towards undoing Governor Adams Oshiomole and the Action Congress in the state, to commence.
In this interview with a Chieftain of Action Congress in Edo State , Chief Tom Ikimi, he speaks of the challenges posed by the PDP, the chances of the Comrade Governor and the role Edo indigenes will play in deciding the winner.
The emergence of Gen. Charles Archiabvare as the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Edo State is no longer news. Is ACN and Governor Oshiomole not worried because the man is said to be loaded and there are fears he may influence the voters going by the level of poverty in the land and all that?
Well I understand that the PDP has concluded its convention in Benin City where they have selected one of their aspirants to be a candidate to run in the up coming election in July for the governorship.
Our candidate has not yet been officially chosen but I have every confidence and good hope that Comrade Adams Oshiomole will emerge when the party eventually does its primary. We of the ACN in Edo State have not bothered whoever PDP or any party may bring to contest this election.
As it stands now, Comrade Oshiomole is virtually the house-hold name in Edo State . His support and supporter’s run across party lines and majority of the people who support him don’t even belong to any party.
However, we want a free and fair election which would be conducted on the basis of one man, one vote which would be democratically conducted without any coercion or whatsoever, without any Police coercion or military coercion. Whatever PDP can put forward, it is very clear that Adams Oshiomole will win resoundingly in the first ballot in the coming election.
People have said Governor Oshiomole has worked magic since assumption of office but some are saying others factors may play a role in deciding this matter, including money. Do you believe money politics that would play a huge impact?
It is rather unfortunate that money politics is reigning now in Nigeria . But you can take a horse to the river; you cannot force him to drink. The PDP may pump in as much money as they want but the people will overcome at the end, because they know what they suffered in the previous years of PDP rule.
We have heard of several types of rigging, with all manner of description. Some say it is scientific, some say it is digital and others say it is all about the more you look the less you see. Some people also fear the role of the PDP at the center. How is the ACN in Edo State , planning to counter this?
This election would be between our candidate who is likely to be Comrade Adams Oshiomole and any other candidate. It would not be an election between Comrade Adam Oshiomole against any money bag or against Chief Anenih, the President or anybody. So let the people choose a governor from the candidates that are contesting the election. We have no problem whatsoever, we understand that the only way that PDP under the leadership of Edo State want to pursue the election is on the basis of rigging but our eyes are wide open.

‘We started as friends and ended up in marriage’
Benin City, the Edo State capital, was agog recently as the Benin Royal Family gave out one of its daughters, Princess Ozeikeke Erediauwa, to the Editor-in-Chief of National Daily, Mr Sylvester Ebhodaghe, at a lavish wedding ceremony, attended by eminent personalities in the society. OSAGIE OTABOR writes
From Ekenwan Road, Benin City, Edo State, venue of Believers Loveworld Inc a.k.a Christ Embassy, where the wedding was solemnised to the palace of the Oba of Benin, Omo n’oba Erediauwa, the whole Benin City was locked down. The traffic gridlock was unusual. Everyone in the ancient city knew that the King’s daughter was wedding.
From the peasants to the noveau riche, governors to the governed, everyone wanted to have a glimpse of what was going on. Palace chiefs of various classes and positions looked resplendent in their traditional apparel and paraphernalia of their offices. To all, were the Omo n’Oba not a king, the expression of happiness would have been readily noticeable in him.
Although he was represented by the Crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, Ambassador Eheneden Erediauwa, the monarch nevertheless was happy in giving out his daughter in marriage.
The ceremony began on Friday with the performance of traditional rites within the palace while invited guests were treated to good music by musicians such as Ambassador Joseph Osayomore; the Victorious Gospel Band, led by a couple, Deacon and Mrs. Palmer Omoruyi; the Igbabonelimi traditional acrobatic group from Ubiaja and other entertainers from across the state.
The following day, His Royal Majesty, Omo n’Oba Erediauwa, represented by the Crown Prince, took his sister, Princess Ozeikeke, dressed in white, sleeveless, flowing wedding gown with a white pair of shoes, to the altar where he handed her to the man of her dreams, Sylvester, for wedding vows.
Officiating minister, Pastor Tom Amenkhienan, reminded the couple of the importance of the union, family, peaceful and harmonious co-existence between couples.
The cleric urged them to imbibe the virtues and patience of Christ as well as make Christ the pillar of their home and marriage.
“When you continue to be in Christ who has always been your foundation, the storm will come, but because Christ is your foundation, you will never be shaken. Someone asked me the other day why wicked people live long and refuse to die, and I said it’s because God is giving them a long rope to repent, but if they refuse to repent and die in their sins, then the hottest part of hell will be reserved for them.
“That is why on this occasion I will give kudos to my Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. A few years ago, before he became Governor, Edo State was like an abandoned project site, but today Edo State is alive and working again. There is a new breath of fresh air. I am not a politician, I am not in PDP or ACN. I am in Jesus party and it is because I am in Jesus party that I see the truth and say the truth. Oshiomhole is working, Oshiomhole has worked and Edo is working again. So Comrade Governor, I thank you very, very much. When the Comrade Governor came up, I thought he only knew how to talk, but now we know he talks and works,” he said.
After the church ceremony, the couple was conveyed in a white, ceremonial, limosine Hummer Jeep to the reception which held at the palace ground and was anchored by Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo, who was assisted by a stand up female comedian known as Tatafo.
The groom, who was clad in a navy blue, long suit with a white sleeve-shirt, white waist coat and white tie, told journalists that they met in a very strange and difficult circumstance.
His words: “We started as friends before it led to marriage. Oze has brought so much happiness into my life. She is the best thing that has happened to my life.”
Dignitaries from all walks of life graced the occasion. They were led by the Governor of Edo, Comrade Oshiomhole; who was joined by his Delta and Akwa Ibom states counterparts, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan and Godswill Akpabio; Anambra State governor was represented by his Commissioner of Information, Chief Maja Umeh; three former governors of Edo, Rivers and Anambra states, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Dr Peter Odili and Mrs Virgy Etiaba; two former ministers, Mr Frank Nweke Jnr. and Prof Dora Akunyili; Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Uyigue Igbe and some lawmakers of the state.
Others included the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees Member, Chief Anthony Anenih; former Executive vice-chairman of Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), Dr. Ernest Ndukwe; and the Iyase of Benin Kingdom (the traditional Prime Minister), who led some palace chiefs to the ceremony.
Chairman of the occasion, Dr Uduaghan, advised the couple to learn to blossom their union in patience, love and understanding.
He said: “There is nothing I can really tell you about marriage than to be very patient with each other. As those of us who have been in marriage often say, experience is the best teacher.”

8 die as cult war rages in Benin
BENIN—EIGHT   persons have been killed in the past four days in different parts of Benin City in a renewed war among rival cult groups in the state.
Two Benin-based local actors, Mr Eghauyi Ogheide, a.k.a Ukeke, and Eghosa Idehen, also known as Erejiro, were also shot dead Tuesday by suspected assassins. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Peter Ogboi, said, however, that the police was investigating the actual cause of death.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Adams Oshiomhole on Arts, Culture and Tourism, Mr Orobosa Omo-Ojo, described the brutal murder of the artists as shocking, lamenting that “the artiste community will surely miss them dearly.â€
Meanwhile, the Edo state Police command has beefed up security in all parts of the city. Vanguard was reliably informed that over two thousand detectives have been deployed in all parts of the city to monitor the activities of the rampaging cultists.
The killings, Vanguard learnt, started last Monday in different parts of the city. Corpses were found at GRA, Dawson road and Upper Mission. The Police spokesman in the state, ASP Ogboi, who expressed concern over the situation, said the police in the state was doing all it could to bring the situation under control.
According to him, “I cannot tell you all we have been doing to stop this dastardly act. But all I can say is that we are on it. We have made some arrests and we are clamping down on cultists. We are equally looking at those who were arrested but were charged to court in the past. We are also going to hold meetings with community leaders and other stakeholders because these people committing this havoc are from one community or the other.
“So we are on top of the situation. We have increased surveillance everywhere. So we are not sleeping because this madness must stop,†he asserted.
Lamenting the killing of the two artists, Omo-Ojo stated that “as an artist, I appreciate the dark clouds that have befallen our land. Certainly, the deceased artists were leading lights of our rich artistic and cultural heritage that has made us proud as a people. No doubt, the artist community will miss them dearly, so also the entire people of Edo State both home and abroad whose hearts they daily filled with laughter and humour in their off moments.”

Security agencies uncover Boko Haram plot to attack South
A plot by the militant Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to extend its operations to the southern part of the country has been uncovered by security agencies.
SATURDAY PUNCH investigations in Abuja on Friday showed that the sect had chosen some southern cities such as Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Onitsha and Warri for attacks.
It was learnt that following sustained attacks on the sect’s strongholds in Borno and Yobe states by security agencies, its members had dispersed to other parts of the country.
Security sources said that the group, which had carried out several devastating bombings and gun attacks in Kano that claim over 185 lives, was looking beyond the North in its future terror campaign.
One of the reasons for spreading its operation to the South, it was learnt, was in order not to limit its campaign to an ethnic agenda.
A top security source told SATURDAY PUNCH that there was likelihood that the Boko Haram might have some of their backers resident in the South.
The source said that the mastermind of the Christmas Day bomb attack on St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, Kabiru Sokoto, was sighted in Lagos after the incident.
It was learnt that security agencies were leaving no stone unturned in checking the moves of the arrested terror suspects and drawing probable inferences from them.
The source said, “It was not a coincidence that Sokoto, who had been on the wanted list of the police before December 25, was sighted in Lagos.
“His presence in Lagos was not for fun. This is one of the angles security agencies are working on.
“I think the group has noticed that security is not tight in the South and there have not been bombings. They are out to cash in on the laxity.”
The Senate Committee on Police, which probed the escape of Sokoto from custody, had last February said that the suspect was seen in Lagos on December 13.
The committee chairman, Senator Paulinus Nwagu, had, while presenting the report of the probe said, “Police intelligence revealed that prior to his arrest on January 14, 2011, Kabiru Sokoto had been on the wanted list of security agencies.
“Sokoto was reported to have been noticed within the vicinity of Snake Island, Lagos, and left Lagos sometime on December 13, 2011 and disappeared from surveillance monitoring until January 11, 2012.
“He was later traced to Abaji in the Federal Capital Territory.
“Police detectives traced him from Abaji to Abuja on the same date and further traced him to Asokoro-Abuja, where he was finally apprehended at about 0240 hours (2.40 am) on January 14, 2012, at the Borno State Governor’s Lodge at Iro Dan Musa Street, Asokoro, Abuja.”
Intelligence report had revealed that Boko Haram sympathisers had moved to the South, from where they coordinated operations of the sect in the North.
It was learnt that the sect decided to shift to the South in order to divert the attention of security agencies, who are on the trail of its members in the North.
A security source stated, “Since the heat has been turned on them, they have been moving to Lagos and other cities, where they mix with unsuspecting northerners residing in those cities.”
He said that the sect’s plot to attack the South was aimed at further creating the impression that there was instability in the country.
The source said, “You will observe that activities of the sect are ebbing due to unrelenting efforts of security agencies.
“But Boko Haram is also devising another method. This time around, it is looking at ways of attacking the South.”
He, however, lamented that security agencies would have recorded more successes, if not for pro-Boko Haram elements in the Presidency.
According to him, some people, who are sympathetic to the Boko Haram cause, are frustrating security agencies’ plans to “deal a final blow on the sect.”
President Goodluck Jonathan on January 8 had said that the sect had infiltrated his government.
He had said, “Some of them are in the executive arm of government, some of them are in the parliamentary/legislative arm of government while some of them are even in the judiciary.
“Some are also in the armed forces, the police and other security agencies. Some continue to dip their hands and eat with you and you won’t even know the person who will point a gun at you or plant a bomb behind your house.”
When contacted, the police on Friday denied knowledge of any moves by the Islamic sect to spread its mayhem to the South.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olusola Amore, said he was not aware of such a move and did not say anything further.
But a top security source said that there was a security alert all over the country and not just the South-West.
The source said that security agents were not expecting the sect to disclose its next move before steps were taken to stop it.
According to the source, the leadership of the Muslim community in the South-West has commenced an awareness campaign through the imams against acts of terror being perpetrated under the cloak of religion.
The source recalled that the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Raji Fashola, had pulled down three places of worship near the seat of government at Alausa because of incriminating security reports against the sect.
“There is security alert all over the country, not only in the South-West; the so-called plan is something we don’t expect them to execute before we take proactive steps.
“Security agents are aware of their advanced plans and are nipping them in the bud.
“The southern Muslims have value for human lives; they know that nobody can fight for God. They are not inconsiderate. The Muslim leadership in the South are putting their members on the alert; imams are already doing that,” a leader of the Muslim community said.
In Port Harcourt, a leader of the Muslim community, Alhaji Sarki Gabas, denied that Muslims were using their mosques as armoury for the sect in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.
Gabas reportedly denied the reports linking Muslims in the Rivers State capital with perpetrators of terror acts in the society.
Gabas had said, “It is not true that Victoria Street (in Port Harcourt) Mosque is being used for training Islamic militants and it is not true also that the Islamic school in Mile 3 houses militants and that Elelenwa Mosque is used as armoury.
“All these are lies. We do not believe in violence.”
